What the Underground Railway Museum Shows

The Underground Railway Museum Budapest focuses on the Millennium Underground, inaugurated on 2 May 1896 as the first underground railway on the European continent.

The exhibition occupies an original section of its tunnel, taken out of service in 1955 during construction of the East-West metro line. The museum has been open to the public since 1975 and was renewed in 1996 for the railway’s centenary.

Start with the entrance hall, where the original “Gizella tér” inscription from the former downtown terminus is displayed. Made with Zsolnay glazed tiles, it introduces the railway’s past before the main collection. Three carriages—numbered 19, 1 and 81—are on display. They were brought into the exhibition space through the open track ceiling by crane in 1975.

Alongside the carriages, the collection includes railway relics, original plans, maps, building reports, photographs and models. Its final section turns to metro construction. The museum also has periodic exhibitions, educational programmes, a children’s corner and a museum shop.

Opening Times and Ticket Information

The listed opening hours are 10:00–17:00 Tuesday through Sunday, with the museum closed on Mondays. Admission is HUF 1,000 for adults and HUF 500 for students and pensioners. Groups of 8 or more pay HUF 700 per person. The family rate is HUF 700 per person for a maximum of 2 accompanying adults with a child under 18.

BKV says you can pay at the checkout by cash or credit card. Opening times and prices can change, so check the official site before you go. For questions, the museum’s contact email is muzeum@bkv.hu.

Finding the Museum at Deák Ferenc tér

Finding the Museum at Deák Ferenc tér

The museum is inside the metro-station underpass at Deák Ferenc tér, within the BKK Customer Service Centre. Deák Ferenc tér is a metro interchange, so you can reach the area on the Budapest metro before heading down to the underpass. The Millennium Underground itself runs between Vörösmarty tér and Mexikói út.

If you’re using that line, regular BKK tickets and passes are valid. Validate your ticket when entering the station. For a broader overview of routes and fares, see this Budapest metro and public transport guide.

Paulay Downtown Apartments is about a 4-minute walk from the museum, making it straightforward to include a visit in your plans around Deák Ferenc tér.

How the Museum Fits into a Central Budapest Walk

The museum’s position at a metro interchange makes it easy to pair with nearby sightseeing, though the collection itself offers a focused look at transport history rather than a broad overview of the city.

To keep the route simple, visit the museum at Deák Ferenc tér, then continue on foot toward St. Stephen’s Basilica. For practical details on that stop, use this guide to visiting St. Stephen’s Basilica.

You can also make the museum a history stop before or after travelling on the Millennium Underground. Its tunnel setting and surviving railway carriages give context to the line, while the plans, photographs and models trace the wider development of Budapest’s metro.
